Topiary trees

When it comes to topiary trees, most people first think of the trees London plane (Platanus × acerifolia) and linden (Tilia × europaea). This is quite understandable because these varieties have been used for many years. However, many other attractive species of topiary trees are available. For example, European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) and Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica) are also species that can be used in many different ways.

Privacy thanks to topiary trees

Because they conceal the garden, provide shade and allow residents to enjoy themselves to the maximum, topiary trees offer you additional privacy. Topiary trees are generally easy to shape and keep in shape due to their characteristics. Examples of Carpinus are multistem in a roof shape, screen-shaped on the trunk, screen-shaped from below, but can also be used in block, spherical or cylindrical shapes.

Topiary trees for small and large gardens alike

Because topiary trees are modelled annually, they are ideally suited both to small as well as large gardens. If you prune more, this causes more branching. This ensures that the tree remains nice and compact and grows in a dense shape. The tree is usually kept in shape using a bamboo or iron frame where the branches are tied along the frame with tubular ties. It’s important to remember to remove the frame at the right time to prevent in-growth into the tree. This is usually only possible after a number of years. If you remove the frame too early, the tree will return to its original shape.
